There is snow where gold has shone
In sunbright splashes on her head;
I kiss a cheek scarlet has known;
My lips touch withered rose instead.

A dull stare torn from ashen lid,
Rewards the warm and tender word;
Understanding took time's bid;
With muffled footsteps left unheard.

A vessel once so proud and taut,
Laughing as the storm appears;
Sails now stripped and caring naught;
Decayed and beached by passing years.

Lovers, dream the dark away;
For when the night is spent, comes dawn;
Burning moments day by day;
Love is here and then is gone.
